Under the Violet Shade

"Under the Violet Shade"
(Original characters for commission)

The last commission I had done for 2013, and the longest to complete, as it was commissioned back in May, and only finished in December... The characters are original to the client, and she loves the idea of purple trees, I ended up on doing a lavender tree for reference, given the winter setting. Doing the characters was quite trying because of their size on the paper and making sure they had enough detail to not look lazily done, and the tree itself took the longest, and probably created the long gaps between sessions with this piece. There was a lot of daunting elements about this, and to be quite frank, I'm not completely satisfied with the final product. If I just had some more colors...
Kelli, if you read this, I'm game for a re-do in the future! XD (But I am glad you're happy with it, so that's all that should matter to me)

Mercury Crystal Power

"Mercury Crystal Power"
(Sailor Mercury from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon SuperS)

Another Sailor Moon-themed Christmas present, her favorite is Sailor Mercury/Ami/Amy. To remain consistent with the Usagi picture I did previously, I went with her SuperS appearance, which is actually far more subtle, with only longer tassels on the back bow. I must admit, I made her look considerably more mature than I had intended... I'm just no good with super-skinny body types, but that's okay. This can be considered a bit more "realistic," I guess. XD

Moon Cosmic Power

"Moon Cosmic Power"
(Sailor Moon from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon SuperS)

A Christmas present for a friend, I've - for some reason - always wanted to do fan art for Sailor Moon, but my knowledge is limited, based only on some of the earlier seasons and select episodes. After recently getting a lot of resources for character drafts and knowing I have friends who loved and grew up with the series, I decided to do a few pieces. The SuperS iteration stood out to me, being just different enough to show Usagi/Serena as the leader, but I definitely gave her a much more stern, serious face. Perhaps, too serious. ^_^;;

The Red

"The Red"
(Adol Christin from Ys Seven)

A belated last-Christmas gift art I had meant to give to my friend over at Octobomb Studios, Who, while is a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda, also loves the Ys series. I've not played any, personally, since all but two are on systems I don't own. :\ I do like the design of his latest iteration, and , must admit, I am extremely proud of this picture! From the fabric flow to the shine of the blade, I made a piece that gives a real good sense of motion and action!

Magical Climax ~Magiking~

"Magical Climax ~Magiking~"
(Magiking from Mahou Sentai Magiranger)

This was originally intended on being a Christmas present for a friend last year, however many idea conflicts and production issues lead to its extreme belatedness.
I did this in sort of an Art Nouveau style (referenceing a bunch of Alphonse Mucha's works), and while I designed the background design on photoshop, I redrew it by hand to keep it from looking too clean against the hand-drawn robo image. The colors are also flat to continue the style effect.

The Black Gear that Screams 'Death'

"The Black Gear that Screams 'Death'" (Disambiguated)
(Fei, Id and Weltall from Xenogears)

A complete redo of the Awakening, I redrew all three using more consistent references, as well as proper color charts to make sure the characters and Gear were as accurate as possible. The plan was to do a collage with these (as I did with the previous version), that will look like an old 90's anime LD jacket, which can be seen below.

A~!

"A~!"
(MS-06S Char's Zaku from Mobile Suit Gundam / Commission)

A commission by Falldog from Otaku Revolution, its a simple (and adorable) image of an SD Char's Zaku getting your attention! Like the Gundam one previous, this was a fun little departure from my more recent string of full serious illustrations. This and its sister-image will be used on his site in the near future, so look forward to it!

"Yatta!"
(RX-78-2 Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam / Commission)

A commission by Falldog from Otaku Revolution, its a simple (and admittedly cute) image of an SD Gundam giving a thumbs up! Not really much else to say, but this was a fun little departure from full, more-serious illustrations. This and its sister-image will be used on his site in the near future, so look forward to it!

Eyes on Me

 "Eyes on Me"
(Final Fantasy VIII / Original)

The key illustration for the invitations to our wedding. It was difficult capturing just the right emotion for us, but in the end, I believe turned out almost exactly as planned. I was aiming toward a more watercolor-look with the colors... While I think it could have been better, I don't feel it was a failed attempt. And, yes, my fiance and I are getting married dressed as Rinoa and Squall, respectively, as it's our favorite love story from our favorite Final Fantasy game.

Waiting

"Waiting'"
(Original character for commission)

There's not a lot I can say about the character, himself, since this is an OC by the client (and what little I know, I'm bound to an NDA).
Like with Peer-to-Peer, this was another very experimental commission, where I tried my hand at weather effects. While painstaking in it's execution, the result is actually quite satisfying, and making sure everything was "flowing" in the same direction challenged me quite a bit.

Peer-to-Peer

"Peer-to-Peer"
(RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and MSZ-006-3 Zeta Gundam III / Commission)

This one was especially interesting, as I got to stylize two real-life people into a Gundam illustration. But, more noteworthy, I am probably the first person to draw the Zeta III in classic 1985 style. XD Everything from the lighting, the sky, scale and proportions, and even the time crunch was a challenge on this piece, but I loved every minute of it!
Commissioned by Tom Winnicki for his and Ashley J. Moore's 2-year anniversary together!

The Struggle Within

"The Struggle Within"
(Fei Fong Wong, Fei (young), Id, Karen, and Grahf from Xenogears)

Originally penned back in 2008 but lacked the ability to digitally color it (computer issues), this piece sat dormant for almost 5 years until I had finally had enough and colored it in my new traditional methods. I feel this would work well had I continued my attempted manga adaptation, but even standalone, it's one of my favorite pieces from recent.

Angel of Death

"Angel of Death"
(Kuja, Vivi Ornitier, Zidane Tribal, and Freya Crescent from Final Fantasy IX)

As a "classic" Final Fantasy fan, I never understood why FFIX never gets more attention. I mean, it had everything that makes A Final Fantasy a, well, "final fantasy." But I digress.
This illustration was an attempt to redo an older piece I did way back in 2004, now that official art has finally been released publicly. However, with even my composition understanding broadening, it can hardly be tied to the old drawing.
This one also had an experimental purpose, where I tested using a white chalk pastel to mimic rain bouncing off of surfaces. Stuff like this really gets my brain going, and I love it. Though I'm sure I forgot some places...

Green Caesar

"Green Caesar"
(Dragon Ranger and Dragon Caesar from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger)

As my favorite ranger back when I was in my youth, the Green Ranger (in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) always stood out among the other five. His outfit was visually distinct; from the inverted triangle patterns on the boots and gloves, gold morpher/buckler, and the armor and gold bands about, his very presence demanded appreciation... Well, that, and he started as Anti-ranger! When I did the other two Sentai illustrations, I couldn't pass doing the most outstanding one for myself.

A Walk

"A Walk"
(Original / Commission)

This piece was an interesting challenge mostly because of the more natural tone and the addition of a background - something I had yet to do since working with Prismacolor markers. considering the level of precise detail I was given with only the smallest bit of artistic liberty, I am extremely proud of this piece, and hope to do further things like this. It's a good change of pace from the usual anime/video game fan art I'm used to.

Chou-Ho

"Chou-Ho"
(Super Shinken Red and Shishi Origami from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger)

Another Christmas gift for another friend of mine (although completed very late). I assumed a lot of trouble with the Origami since it's blocky and static by-design. I think despite that complication, I made it work. I decided on using Super Shinken Red rather than his other variations because it sets a different tone and allowed me to have him contrast the pose of the Origami better. The scan drowns it out, but the emblem in the background was colored using a Gold Sharpie, which gave it a really nice metallic look!
